MiteBiter/Russian Queen cross
I firmly believe that if we are to rid our bees of the Varrora Mite, it will be done by enabling the bees to do it themselves. Miticides are a short term solution causing, long term problems. They are not the answer.
Creating a strain of bees that are immune is the answer. Both the Purdue Ankle Biter (VSH) and the Russian honey bee are resistant. I believe they are each resistant using different mechanics. I will be doing many breeding experiments by crossing Russian queens with Mite Biter drones and Mite Biter Queens with Russian drones. These hybrids will be available and should provide exceptional mite resistance. Further testing and evaluation will determine how much resistance they have Update July 20, 2020 I'm moving forward with crossing Russians with Mitebiters. I will be grafting from the breeders, but probably won't have many queens avail from this cross until very late in the season. |
